On Friday, Aug. 26, Victor Shelstad of web3 card game Aegir Tactics, and Phil Gabardo of DEX aggregator Alammex, spoke to the Algo fam in an AMA hosted by Fred Estante and the Algorand Miami Accelerator. @Pigi_Pal, Head of Gaming at the Algorand Foundation, and @CysecB held the AMA on Twitter Spaces.

Aegir Tactics is a web3 card game brought to us by Victor, a digital card game veteran who has played at major championships hosted by Blizzard. Victor set out on this project with the aim of making games — especially digital card games — more accessible to the average player. He remarks that, while, since 2015, games are more accessible, triple-A titles remain very expensive. His passion stems from his frustration at games he enjoys, like Hearthstone, favoring those with the resources to purchase the right booster packs and start with an unfair advantage. Victor believes games must evolve further, through immutable game assets, robust economies, and player governance. These are things Victor believes will democratize gameplay and be friendly to new users. The game is set to enter into the demo phase soon, and plans on going into closed beta by the end of the year.

Alammex is a DEX aggregator, meaning the app finds the best deals on ALGO/ASA swaps using data from multiple exchanges, including Tinyman, Yieldly, and Pact. For trades with low liquidity, Alammex uses a multi-hop protocol which routes the transaction through higher-liquidity pairs on multiple exchanges to achieve the desired result. Phil notes that most transactions are ALGO/ASA swaps rather than between ASAs themselves, and most users will find better exchange rates through his platform.

The two took questions from the community, outlining how their projects differentiate from similar ones in the ecosystem

Aegir Tactics will simultaneously be a digital card game on the blockchain and a game aimed at onboarding those unfamiliar with blockchains. Hence, gameplay itself occurs off-chain with low barriers to entry. One thing people notice about the game is its state-of-the-art visuals, something Victor admits is not by accident. Illustration is a top priority for the parent company Star Sight Labs, and they consulted top designers with credentials including Dota 2 and Supercell. This represents Victor’s desire to create an accessible game with a feel similar to AAA titles.

Tokenomics of Aegir Tactics

Aegir Tactics uses tokenomics to create a robust economy around its in-game assets. The cards themselves are NFTs which are held immutably by the player, with aims to be traded in an in-game marketplace and secondary marketplaces. When players progress in Aegir Tactics, they receive rewards in the form of an in-game token. This token is the primary currency used for trading assets and the community’s form of governance. Victor talked of plans to implement a treasury which makes use of game revenue set aside for governance.

Alammex aims to stand out from fellow aggregators by offering its services to everybody, regardless of holdings of a governance token, like Defly. The app charges no commissions, except on trades which profit the user or those which require multi-hop transactions. The app provides resources to developers in the form of an API which allows developers to earn commissions for integrating Alammex into their projects. To date, trades on Alammex have amounted to $831k in volume, 6200 swaps, and 158 unique swappers.

Both projects are members of Algorand Miami Accelerator’s second cohort, and credit the organization for their success so far. Phil, who once worked for Amazon developing vertical search capabilities for Alexa before pursuing Alammex full time, believes that Algorand Miami Accelerator and the Algorand Foundation were essential to providing him resources, and plans to leverage these organizations to find partners and funding in the future. Victor credits the accelerator with his ability to find top talent capable of implementing the Unreal game engine with the Algorand blockchain, and to fill the marketing gap.
